1944 Auster Mk VD
$AUD89'000
Originally manufactured in 1944 as an Auster AOP Mk V, VH-ARX is a beautifully restored example with just 2,025.9 hours total time since new, an exceptional military and civilian history, and an extensive restoration completed around 2023.
Entering Royal Air Force service as TW498 in October 1945, the aircraft was delivered to No. 22 Elementary Flying Training School on 18 February 1946, where it was associated with the training of pilots connected to the Royal Canadian Air Force's 664 Squadron. The aircraft accumulated 1,006 hours of RAF flying time. Its distinguished postwar ownership included Air Commodore Allen Wheeler, the prominent British test pilot and aeronautical engineer, and Dorothy, a member of the Shuttleworth aviation family.
After arriving in Australia in the early 1950s, VH-ARX became part of Australian aviation history when Ron Mortimer flew the aircraft during the February 1960 search for four-year-old Steven Walls near Guyra, NSW. Mortimer later recalled flying at very low altitude over two or three days while searching the surrounding countryside. Steven was eventually found alive after four days, and the remarkable rescue inspired Johnny Ashcroft's famous song Little Boy Lost and a subsequent feature film.
Converted to Mk VD configuration in 1972 with the more powerful 145 hp de Havilland Gipsy Major engine, the aircraft has more recently undergone a restoration at Ultimate Aero in Boonah, Queensland. Approximately $95,000 was invested in the restoration. Combining its remarkable provenance, low airframe time and distinctive four-seat configuration, VH-ARX presents an appealing opportunity for vintage aircraft enthusiasts and collectors.
